Homemade Kahlua

Have you ever thought about the ingredients that go into your drinks? With a huge emphasis now on wanting to know what goes into our food and the realisation that the better the ingredient you start with the better the final dish, I started to think about some of the things I drink.  In our summer edition of Nourish I met Karen & Neil Vowles from the Coromandel Brewing company and decided that perhaps brewing my own beer may be a bit beyond me and I will have to content myself with enjoying some of the many craft brews now available.  I also think I will leave wine making to the experts, or at least until I have a few acres to grow my own grapes on.  So this summer I am experimenting with making ginger beer (watch this space) but in the mean time and with Christmas and the New Year upon us I started with something a lot simpler, my own Kalhua.

Using beautiful coffee from the boys at Rocket a dash of Heilala vanilla and some beautiful Stolen Rum.  The recipe actually called for vodka but I didn’t have any and hey this was an experiment and in actual fact tasted great.   So if you would like to have a go at making your own Kahlua here is the recipe;

6 cups of strong coffee
3 tspns Vanilla extract
500g brown sugar
500mls Vodka (or rum in my case)

Dissolve the sugar in your freshly brewed coffee and allow to cool.  Whne cold mix in the vanilla and vodka and that’s it folks, your own Khalua.
